Sun Sound was first successfully trialled on Cronulla beaches, by Sutherland Shire Council in summer 2009/10. Receiving a ‘Highly Commended’ Local Government Award in 2010 for its leadership and achievements, Council now plans to further expand the Sun Sound in the community.
Brad Whittaker, Manager Beach Operations, implemented the set up and broadcast, of the Sun Sound at key lifeguard towers using custom-made audio units. “Now that we’ve developed the units, they’re available for all Councils to use and hook up to any existing PA system” said Brad.
Informing colleagues and staff was a key factor in the success of the roll out. “I briefed the lifeguards and surf patrols to make sure they were all across it, and now it’s become a daily habit to play the Sun Sound hourly (11am to 3pm). Our lifeguards and surf patrols are saving lives in the water all day – now they can also save lives with the press of a button!”
Sutherland Council also promoted the Sun Sound through their community channels, including promotional material in their newsletters, websites and at community events. “It was easy as we were provided with all we needed to simply slot information into our existing communication materials. It’s good to know it helped increase awareness, with 86% of the local community recognising the Sun Sound after just one summer”
“As a surfer and father of two teenagers, I know just how important the sun smart message is. As Councils, we have a great opportunity to support initiatives that benefit the community’s health and well being – and the Sun Sound is a great example. Now that we’ve seen the community benefit and support, other Council staff are keen to be involved by playing the Sun Sound at our community events and swimming pools.
Plans are also underway to display outdoor permanent signs, provided by the Cancer Council, to raise community awareness about the Sun Sound.
